Annual Freedom Walk

Honoring the Journey. Supporting the Future.

“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”

Why We Walk

The Annual Freedom Walk honors Booker T. Washington’s historic 500-mile journey from Malden, West Virginia, to Hampton, Virginia, to secure an education. This incredible feat of perseverance is indicative of how important gaining an education was for Booker.

The Friends of Booker T. Washington National Monument host this event every year not only to honor Dr. Washington’s legacy but because we also desire to see the next generation of leaders achieve their goals to further their education and go far beyond our expectations.

📍

The Event

The Freedom Walk is a community event that brings together individuals, families, and organizations. Participants can register to walk individually or as a team. Anyone can join us for group walks at the National Monument or can also participate virtually from their own locations.

The 6th Annual Freedom Walk will take place August 1 – October 3, 2026 with a Kick-Off Event on August 1, 2026 at Booker T. Washington National Monument at 10:00 a.m. The recognition event for all contributions made will take place on October 17, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at BTWNM.

🎓

The Cause

Every step taken and every dollar raised supports the FBTWNM Scholarship Fund. These scholarships are awarded annually to qualifying seniors at Franklin County High School, empowering them to pursue their educational dreams.

How to Participate

You do not have to be physically present at the park to make a difference. We welcome participants from all over to join us in spirit and support. We encourage participants to seek sponsorships for their walk—aiming for symbolic goals like "500 miles" or more.
